SP International Pictures is bringing the much-loved Lone Wolf and Cub: Final Conflict to the big screen.

Producer Steven Paul, who is also currently hard at work on his Ghost in The Shell adaptation, has acquired remake and sequel rights to the series, which rose to prominence in 1970. The book was written by Koike Kazuo and drawn by Goseki Kojima, and .Paul is a huge fan of the source material, along with its various other adaptations, which include six films, four plays, and a television series.

"I have been a huge fan of the property for many years and can't tell you how excited I am to have the opportunity to embark on this journey," Paul said in a statement (via Variety).

Lone Wolf and Cub: Final Conflict is the story of a samurai who finds himself framed for an assassination attempt he had nothing to do with and his journey to becoming an assassin for hire. According to Paul, Final Conflict will have a predominantly Japanese cast, something he came under fire for with his Ghost in the Shell film. While the film sports a talented cast, the casting of Scarlett Johansson in the lead role rubbed some the wrong way since the character is originally of Asian descent. It looks as if Paul will be going a different route for Lone Wolf and Cub.

Lone Wolf and Cub: Final Conflict is scheduled to start shooting sometime in 2017, with Paramount distributing the film.
