In advance of Comic Con International: San Diego, Archie Comics and SEGA today announced plans for a third ongoing Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series, Sonic Boom, based on the upcoming franchise extension that will include two new video games, a Cartoon Network CG-animated TV series, and an extensive merchandising program.

Written by bestselling Sonic comic scribe Ian Flynn, the comic series will take place in the same story universe as the TV series and games, featuring a different take on the Sonic the Hedgehog universe, with a new look and feel. Sonic and his friends Tails, Amy, Knuckles are joined by new member Sticks.

"Sonic is still pretty much what you'd expect – quick-witted, playful, and snarky," Flynn told IGN. "Tails is likewise very much the same as he's been in the current games – an equal partner in Sonic's adventures. Knuckles has gotten a bit goofier, but his friendly rivalry with Sonic remains. Amy has traded in her total fixation on Sonic for being the sensible one of the group… mostly."

The series will launch in October.
