Spawn #220 cover

We never thought we would describe a cover of Todd McFarlane's Spawn as cute, but that's exactly the word being used to describe one of the variant covers to Spawn #220. It's all part of the plan Image Comics announced last month for Chris Giarrusso (G-MAN) to create special "cute" versions of the covers of classic Image titles. The first cover in series was Youngblood, which was issued as a special limited-run variants cover of Youngblood #71. The second cover in the series is a re-creation of Spawn #1, which is one of seven variants being produced for Spawn #220. The variants help to commemorate the series' twentieth anniversary. In addition to the Giarrusso variant, other variant covers for Spawn #220 include two homages to classic Image series drawn by McFarlane. "Savage Spawn" pays tribute to the first issue of Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon, while "Youngblood Spawn" pays tribute to the first issue of Rob Liefeld's Youngblood. Spawn #220 is written by Todd McFarlane with art by Szymon Kudranski According to the Image Comics description, "Twenty years of SPAWN twists and turns will begin to coalesce as Jim Downing embraces the full might of his horrific hell-born powers to piece together a mystery that has ties to the very core of the Spawn universe." Spawn #220 is set to arrive in comic book stores on June 6, 2012.
