The Avengers

became the first film ever to break $100 million on its second weekend, demolishing the previous record by more than $25 million and taking the weekend box office title in a walk, according to projections at Box Office Mojo. Interestingly, IMDb Managing Editor Keith Simanton, who oversees Box Office Mojo, predicted as much in our column last week. Last week, every day's predictions for The Avengers were eventually projected upwards, meaning that more tickets were actually sold than experts anticipated and became the first film ever to accomplish a $200 million opening weekend. Now, it's projected to make $103.2 million, a drop of just under 50% (about normal) and an unheard-of cinematic achievement. The previous second week record, held by Avatar, was under $76 million and besides The Avengers, only that film and The Dark Knight had ever surpassed $75 million in their second frame before. At present, The Dark Knight remains the best-received of the three on Rotten Tomatoes, the popular movie review aggregator. 94% of The Dark Knight reviews are positive, as compared to 93% for The Avengers and 83% for Avatar.
