While Yahoo! Movies breaks everyone's heart by asserting there's still no new information on Goonies sequel at the moment, the piece does offer some hope for new content -- in the form of an off-Broadway play planned for release in the next couple of years.

Discussing the film's enduring appeal and sequel rumors, Donner discussed how hard it was to convince people it would work. After all, he admitted, he probably would have been skeptical himself.

"I wouldn't have gone to see The Goonies," Donner said. "That wasn't my kind of movie. Still not my kind of movie. But it was a great experience making it and living with it afterwards. We're going to do an off-Broadway, do you know what immersion theatre is? Where there's no seats, the venue is you go into a warehouse and there's something happening in that warehouse and that's the play you've come to see, only you become part of it and you travel through with actors. It's very popular now. We're doing one on The Goonies. It will take another year or so but it's going to be wonderful."

Taking cult classics from the big screen to a small stage isn't new; it's actually a great way of creating short-term revenue and winning a new audience to the theatre. Still, it sounds like The Goonies is being planned as something much bigger than a one-night live-reading of the Better Off Dead script.

We'll keep you updated as the project moves forward.
