Zordon Reveals Why He Chose Jason Over Zack To Lead The Power Rangers

The Power Rangers are often led by the Red Ranger, but that role has been somewhat contested in Go Go Power Rangers. As a result, Zordon finally reveals why he chose Jason for the coveted role of leader.

Spoilers incoming for Go Go Power Rangers #4, so if you haven’t read the issue yet you’ve been warned.

The Power Rangers do their best to take on Rita and Finster’s latest monstrous creation Flog, and the beast actually manages to do significant damage to Angel Grove and the Rangers themselves. Due to Jason being stuck around other people, he can’t morph, so the other four Ranges have to pick up the slack and take the creature on without the Megazord.

Due to some quick thinking by Zack, the city’s power grid gets taken out, allowing Jason to morph and join the other Rangers. While they do take down Flog, Zack has some words with Zordon about why he picked Jason over Zack, who clearly has what it takes to lead a team.

“I love Jason, I do, but back on the moon when he went off looking for Rita, I found the missing astronauts,” Zack said. “And yesterday, when he got himself in trouble, I led the team against Flog. Am I not good enough? What’s the deal?”

Zordon reveals that Jason’s previous weakness is the reason why. “Zack, I may be violating a trust by telling you this, but I believe your actions have earned it. Jason was selected to be the leader o the Rangers because he was once like Rita. Someone who used their power to take what they wanted. But he saw the error of his ways and has been working to make amends ever since. He would die before he would allow another Ranger to go down that path.”

In Jason’s defense, it isn’t like he tried to take over the world or anything, but he did bully those who weren’t as skilled and able as he was. That drive to make amends for that drives Jason to be the best leader he can, not only for the others but for himself.

Zordon offers up one more piece of advice for Zack, saying “Remember, just because you aren’t out in front, doesn’t make you any less valuable. A good team is filled with leaders, ready to step in when needed, especially if the unthinkable happens.”

It’s a far cry from what Rita told Zack before, a time that almost saw Zack become the Green Ranger. Hit the next slide to see the difference.

Rita Tries To Make Zack Her Green Ranger

Earlier in the series, a new wrinkle is added to the Power Rangers mythos, as Rita tries to convince Zack to be her Green Ranger.

As you know, the role would eventually go to Tommy Oliver, but that wasn’t her first attempt. During a particularly trying time for Zack, Rita transported him to her moon base. The pitch? That all the battles and destruction could stop if Zack joined her as her ally.

“I think you can be more, Zack. You should be more, and on my team, you can be. I know what it’s like to be a second in command, who has what it takes to lead. You and I are kindred spirits. And make no mistake, that’s what I’m offering here. A chance to lead us to a better world.”

Zack then saw himself on Rita’s viewing globe in a Green Ranger costume in a goldenย world, and for a minute it appears to be considering Rita’s offer. Eventually he turns her down by punching Goldar, attempting to steal the Dragon Coin as well, but the world of Power Rangers would certainly be different if he accepted her offer.

As for Rita, she has continuedย to fight the Rangers with her monster creations, and in this issue of Powerย Rangers she explains why she still follows through in the big battles despite the enormous odds against them.

“We must see every skirmish to its conclusion. It’s been this way on countless worlds. Every movie, every battle, every monster is a wound. Individualย each cut may miss the mark, but eventually, with enough cuts, one will strike the target…and that’s when everything changes.”

That Other Big Reveal

While Go Go Power Rangers focused on the Rangers, the biggest reveal might just be what happened to their friend.

Kimberly is currently going out with another friendย of the Rangers named Matt. He hangs out with them on a regular basis, and recently started dating Kimberly, though he is totally unaware of their secret identities.

In issue #3 and #4, Matt is one of the many hurt in the destruction caused by Rita and Finster’sย monster Flog. Being a normal human, his injuries are pretty substantial, and he is still unconsciousย even after being taken to the hospital by Kimberly.

After they take down Flog, Kimberly stays with him in his hospital room overnight, waiting for him to wake up. Things don’t look so good when Zack visits his room, but as he and Kim talk Matt wakes up, saying “So I guess the good news is I’m in a hospital and the world didn’t end? Or did it?”

Everyone is relievedย to seem him back, and when Kimberly asks him how he is he responds “I got punched in the face by a giant lizard thingy, but I woke up to two of my favorite people keeping an eye on me…” At this point the font on the text changes, and the scene switches to Rita’s palace. Matt is hanging there, restrained in a sea of Puttiesย and clay, as Rita finishes his sentence “I can’t think of any place I’d rather be.”

So, is the real Matt even awake yet? How did she get ahold of him, and will the Rangers be able to tell the difference? Lots of questions, but it looks like fans will have to wait until Go Go Power Rangers #5 for answers.
