Captain Phasma’s role in The Force Awakens might have been one of the most disappointing elements of the film, as fans had become fascinated with the character from early promotional material, but she was only given a few minutes of screen time. The character is slated to appear in The Last Jedi, but recent rumors hint at the character continuing to be shrouded in mystery, potentially never revealing her face in the upcoming sequel.
As reported by Star Wars News Net, a Reddit user compiled a series of clues that hint at Phasma keeping her helmet on throughout the film. One piece of information comes from a rumored artist involved with Lucasfilm who revealed they were given specific instructions that “…you cannot show Phasma unmasked. Captain Phasma‘s mask stays on during the film so do not send in artwork of Gwendoline Christie’s face.”

This new information might come as a surprise to fans familiar with the Vanity Fair photo shoot earlier this year that showed Phasma with her helmet off. Lucasfilm Story Group member Pablo Hidalgo might have settled this issue with his comments at Comic Con Chile.
Hidalgo pointed out, “For those of you wondering, I see this as a behind the scenes photo of Gwendoline Christie and not necessarily what Phasma looks like without her helmet. But, I will say that she is a human female.”
The initial Reddit post also claims, “As a side note, the source also mentioned that, along with the Phasma directive, they were instructed to ‘only use official reference material.’ Keep in mind that this person is not provided any reference material that isn’t available to the general public.”
The authenticity of these rumors are up for debate, but seeing as an iconic character like Boba Fett, qho earned a large following despite his minimal screen time, never removed his helmet, so it won’t be too surprising if we never see Phasma unmasked.
The Last Jedi lands in theaters December 15.
