When the first full-length trailer for The Last Jedi debuted back in October, audiences were horrified at the brief glimpse of a scene in which Supreme Leader Snoke seemingly overpowered Rey using his Force abilities. In a new Japanese TV spot for the film, a brief shot of Rey seemingly depicts her fighting back with Force powers of her own in Snoke’s throne room.
Based on her surroundings when she unleashes her abilities, it appears as though the room around her is being destroyed, which mirrors scenes we’ve seen of Kylo extending his hand towards Rey.

One theory that explains the above sequence is that Snoke easily neutralizes Rey but escapes the throne room that’s potentially under attack from the Resistance. In the aftermath, Kylo intervenes to offer a truce to Rey, which she responds to with her Force abilities.
Another possibility is that Rey takes on Snoke herself, but with the shot of her being attacked by Snoke seemingly being in an undamaged room, there should be some passage of time between the two events.
The first theory seems much more likely, as a prevalent theme in the upcoming movie is that of moral ambiguity and the lines between right and wrong, Dark and Light being blurred beyond recognition. With Kylo having turned his back on his family, we might see a sequence like the end of Return of the Jedi where Snoke attacks Rey and Kylo intervenes because he feels a connection to her that’s stronger than his connection to Snoke.
The Supreme Leader and his potential identity have become one of the most theorized about elements of The Last Jedi, having only gotten to see a few glimpses of him in The Force Awakens. Actor Andy Serkis, who provided the character’s motion-capture performance, assures fans that Snoke will have a much bigger presence in the upcoming film.
“This time you get to see him, as in his real presence,” Serkis told Entertainment Weekly. “In the previous movie we saw him as this huge hologram and tele-presence, and you get to meet him in the flesh this time.”
The Last Jedi lands in theaters on December 15.
