After eagle-eyed viewers spotted it, many believed it to be actor Jimmy Smits, who played Bail Organa in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Bail is the adoptive father of Luke and Leia, and since Rogue One takes place in the same prequel timeline, it wouldn’t be out of the question for him to show up once again.

During an appearance on The Talk, Aisha Tyler asked Smits if it was him in the footage. A surprised Smits initially denied it, then pretty much came clean.

“No! No…..people got nothing better to do than to look at this little picture? (Laughs) There’s stuff going on in the world! Can you say the word cameo? Can you say the words small part? (laughs) Continue (laughs).”

Now that we know he’s in the film, it opens the door for other characters from the prequels to show up, including everyone’s favorite Jar Jar!

“crickets”

Okay fine, bad idea.

It isn’t the first time that Smits has been approached about Star Wars sequels. Back in 2012, the actor was asked about the franchise and had this to say.

“My character was gone after episode whatever. If they want to call, let them call. There’s more stories to tell, of course, I think. You look at the 007 franchise and it’s going on for [50] years. I mean, there are a lot of people that grew up watching that, so I know that he didn’t pass that on without a lot of caveats. I think there will be involvement with George down the line.”

He didn’t seem too keen on returning at the time, but time can change many things, and it looks like we’ll be seeing more of Bail Organa in Rogue One.
