The title Star Wars: The Last Jedi carries a lot of intrigue, and director Rian Johnson has only fueled the fires of speculation with his comments about what it could mean.

Johnson was speaking with Good Morning America at Disney’s D23 Expo when he revealed that the title’s significance has a certain meaning, but that the meaning could change over the course of the film.

“It’s tough to talk about without talking about it in the context of the movie,” Johnson said, “because it has โ€ฆ not even necessarily multiple meanings, but its meaning evolves over the course of the film. It’s tough to talk about without getting into the story. But, for me, I guess ultimately what it comes down to is that first question: What is the deal with Luke Skywalker?”

As he said before, the relationship between the self-exiled Jedi and the young Force-sensitve pilot will be the main focus of the movie.

“Luke and Rey are kind of the beating heart of the film, I guess, and their relationship,” Johnson said. “So ‘The Last Jedi’ and all of the things that it means is tied up in their story. It was the heart of it. And it’s something where from the very start, even when I was just coming up with the story at the beginning, that title seems crystal clear to me. It’s always made sense.”

We’re interested to learn more about what significance the title will have with the movie, and we’ll get to find out when Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters December 15.
