The Walking Dead‘s Season 7 finale followed the lead of the Season 6 finale in killing off a core character. However, unlike its seasonal predecessor, The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life revealed who died before its conclusion.

Episode 7×16 would be Sasha‘s last.

Following the episode, Sonequa Martin-Green appeared on AMC‘s recap show Talking Dead, along with Daryl Dixon and Negan actors Norman Reedus and Jeffrey Dean Morgan and showrunner Scott Gimple.

To start, host Chris Hardwick asked Martin-Green how she felt about Sasha’s death when learning her time was coming.

“It just felt so right,” Martin-Green said. “It felt so complete. It was quite poetic when I found out how it was gonna happen because I felt like it was the perfect end to my story.”

“I felt like all of my roads had lead to that moment of complete selflessness. It felt perfect.”

Hardwick pointed out that it was awesome to root for a reanimated figure as she made herself into a weapon to kill Negan. “I thought so, too,” Martin-Green said. “In this beautiful way it was the first time we ever rooted for a walker. It was also beautiful because the way I saw was that warrior spirit that lives in. Even in death, I was going to still fight because I had realized my purpose. It had been revealed to to me.”

The character progressed from defending herself to going on the offensive since her introduction in Season 3. “Over the course of my life as Sasha, it was progressing beyond that to the point where I said ‘Okay, I now have a much greater purpose that was even bigger than me,’” Martin-Green pointed out.

As for Morgan, the actor had nothing but compliments for the actress and her character. “I was completely flattered! There’s not a more beautiful walker that ever walked,” Morgan said. “She was so great. She just knocked it out of the park. Knowing what was happening, being in that cell in particular, and the dialgoue that we had…it was just a thrill for me.”

“I think he was genuinely bummed. He liked Sasha. This was not part of his plan, certainly.”

Reedus agreed with Morgan and added a few compliments of his own. “What’s not to miss,” Reedus asked. “Not only do I love her as a girl but her personality, her character that she brought to the show, there’s not anyone like her. She’s very unique. She’s such a fighter and does everything authentic. There’s not a false bone in her body.”

Then, there’s the man who made the call — the showrunner. “It was always about Sasha not being a victim,” Gimple said. “She had wanted a weapon from Eugene. She wanted a knife. She didn’t get one so she became the knife.”
