Dwight will play a crucial role in The Walking Dead should his TV version of the character played by Austin Amelio follow his comic book counterpart written and drawn by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard, respectively.

Spoilers for The Walking Dead comics follow which may translate to spoilers for the AMC series.

Dwight was last seen in Episode 7×07 (Sing Me A Song) after being told by Negan to put Daryl back in his cell before Negan rode off to Alexandria. Shortly thereafter, Daryl escaped his cell and made it back to the Hilltop with Dwight nowhere in sight. So, what’s next for the burnt man?

Going by The Walking Dead comics, Dwight will continue to align himself with Negan and the Saviors but not for long. The character reveals himself as a traitor through King Ezekiel and asks for Rick’s trust ahead of the impending war’s major battles. While the group is reluctant to trust the man who put an arrow through Abraham’s face (Denise’s on the show), Dwight proves himself and offers intel regarding the Saviors’ battle plans.

At one point, Negan covers all of his army’s bullets, knives, and bullets with zombie guts so that even just a scratch from one of their weapons will kill Alexandrians and make them into a weapon, too. Dwight is forced to shoot an arrow at Rick Grimes with Negan at his side but switches the arrows, using a clean one, ultimately saving Rick’s life.

Before the war, Dwight plays a part in freeing Eugene from Negan’s imprisonment and, afterwards, finds himself being the leader of Negan’s old bunch whether he likes it or not.

Dwight would have to see a considerable turnaround on the AMC series should the character follow the path set by his comic book counterpart. However, we have already seen him struggling to accept the way of life put in place by Negan, so it would not be completely out of character for Dwight to prefer Rick’s style of leadership.
