“Twice Upon A Time” finds the Twelfth Doctor (Capaldi) on the brink of regeneration and face-to-face with the First Doctor (David Bradley) who is in the much the same position.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“The magical final chapter of the Twelfth Doctor’s (Peter Capaldi) journey sees the Time Lord team up with his former self, the first ever Doctor (David Bradley – Harry Potter, Game of Thrones) and a returning Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), for one last adventure. Two Doctors stranded in an Arctic snowscape, refusing to face regeneration. Enchanted glass people, stealing their victims from frozen time. And a World War One captain destined to die on the battlefield, but taken from the trenches to play his part in the Doctor’s story. An uplifting new tale about the power of hope in humanity’s darkest hours, Twice Upon A Time marks the end of an era. But as the Doctor must face his past to decide his future, his journey is only just beginningโ€ฆ”

The BBC also released a new motion poster for the episode, featuring both Doctors and companion Bill Potts, which can be seen below.

This year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special will also be the final episode for outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat, who has been at the helm of the franchise since 2010, and the last to feature Pearl Mackie as Bill.

Chris Chibnall, the creator of Broadchurch and a former writer on Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood, will take over as the new showrunner on Doctor Who beginning with season 11. The series will reportedly undergo some big changes when it returns.

The Doctor Who Christmas Special will air on Christmas Day on BBC America. The episode will also be shown in select movie theaters on December 27, 2017, thanks to Fathom Events. The theatrical screening will be accompanied by two bonus features celebrating Peter Capaldi’s time as the Doctor and Steven Moffat’s tenure as the series’ showrunner. Locations and more information are available at the Fathom Events website.
