Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 has once again proved that Monsterverse is a force to be reckoned with, as the franchise dominates streaming charts on two different platforms. Although the second season technically picks up straight after the first, it actually jumps two years forward in the Monsterverse timeline – a very deliberate choice to move this season closer to Godzilla vs. Kong. This is because Cate, Lee, and May were stranded in the Axis Mundi, a mysterious realm subject to time dilation.

The trio emerged from the Axis Mundi in a very different world. The last two years have seen dramatic changes for Monarch itself, given the organization went public during Season 1; there’s a sense in which they was inevitable, given G-Day had revealed the Monsterverse’s Titans to the world. But it turns out things headed in a very different direction to anything anyone expected – largely because of Cate and May’s influence.
5. Kentaro Spent Two Years Working With Hiroshi

Let’s start with the most important change for the characters – namely for Kentaro (played by Ren Watabe). As seen in Monarch‘s finale, he initially believed Cate to be dead, only for Tim to come to him with news of a mysterious signal that was being transmitted from the Axis Mundi. Monarch intended to ignore that signal, but Tim left in frustration and went to Kentaro for help – or, rather, went to Kentaro so he could be taken to Hiroshi Randa. He rightly believed Kentaro’s father had the creativity to figure out a way to get Cate and the others back to the surface world.
Kentaro has been working with Hiroshi for nearly two years now, and Monarch Season 2, episode 1 confirmed he’s a lot more confident now he’s fully committed to the world of the Titans. He also likely knows a lot more about Titans than the other main characters, which will certainly come in helpful now Titan X has been unleashed on the world. The quest to get Cate and May home has clearly changed the course of his life.
4. Hiroshi and Tim Went to Apex For Help

Monarch still had other priorities, so Joe Tippett’s Tim and Takehiro Hira’s Hiroshi went to Apex Cybernetics for help. An established company in Monsterverse lore – major villains in Godzilla vs. Kong, no less – Apex bosses have their own sinister agenda of global dominance. They may not be considered trustworthy, but they nonetheless proved useful for giving Tim and Hiroshi the cash and influence they needed to push for experiments that would allow them to get May, Cate, and Tim home.
3. Monarch Established a Partnership With Apex
In a surprising twist, it seems Monarch and Apex forged some sort of partnership – with Tim serving as the official liaison between the two groups. We know the relationship is destined to break down, with Monarch and Apex officially rivals by the time of Godzilla vs. Kong. It’s safe to assume we’re about to see why that partnership fails.
2. Monarch Outpost 18 Was Built

Monarch has created Outpost 18, essentially a mobile command base that’s amusingly reminiscent of the SHIELD Helicarrier’s introduction in The Avengers back in 2012. This makes sense, given it would be perfect for monitoring amphibian Titans like Godzilla himself, and it’s clearly going to play a key role in the quest to contain Titan X. Tim seems very proud indeed of Outpost 18, perhaps suggesting it’s the fruit of the partnership between Monarch and Apex.
1. The Skull Island Research Base Was Established

Monarch and Apex established a new research base on Skull Island, recognizing this was a place from which they could more easily access the Axis Mundi. Apparently scientists there have spent a full year trialing the technology they’d use to open a rift, and Kong seemingly left them be. Unfortunately, as Monarch Season 2’s premiere revealed, he wasn’t quite so keen when the rift was opened.
