It turns out the creator behind one of Cartoon Network‘s biggest classics has no interest in brining it back with a new revival or reboot any time soon. While Cartoon Network classics are struggling to find a proper streaming home through some major changes in the last few years, many of these shows are also now in the works on returning with new revivals or other even sequel projects with their original creators in tow. Franchises like Regular Show, The Powerpuff Girls, Adventure Time and more are now in the works on coming back, but there are still many others fans are hoping to see.

Dexter’s Laboratory is one such show as it was one of Cartoon Network Studios’ very first original animated shows. But series creator Genndy Tartakovsky revealed in a recent interview with Nexus Point News that he doesn’t really have any desire to return to that world just yet. Joking that it would only be when his “career dies” and he couldn’t “sell a project or do anything else,” Tartakovsky is instead hoping to focus on many of the new projects he currently has on the way.
Dexter’s Laboratory Creator Has No Interest in Reboot

“When my career dies, and I can’t sell a project or do anything else, that’s when [Dexter’s Laboratory] will return to save me and help pay my mortgage and everything,” Tartakovsky joked. “But I think [Samurai Jack] was very organic because we never finished the story. I never looked at it as a revival, but more of a continuation to finish it. And I think, the problem with [Dexter’s Laboratory] was the woman who played Dexter’s voice [Christine Cavanaugh], she passed away a while ago. I feel like her voice was the soul of the show, so it’s very hard for me to do an imitation. Unless we reimagine it in some other way.
But while the creator casts doubt on bringing Dexter’s Laboratory back, Tartakovsky did leave room for a potential return someday due to demand. But at the same time, still looks fondly back at that original run, “People ask me to do more [Dexter’s Laboratory], but at the same time I feel like those first four seasons are very precious to me. Started my career. And in a way, I kind of want to keep them intact. You know, I have other shows that I’m doing, and so maybe there’s room.”
Will Dexter’s Laboratory Ever Return?

This falls in line with how Tartakovsky felt about a potential return for Dexter’s Laboratory a few years ago as well. โDexterย probably no,โ Tartakovsky told ComicBook. โBecause number one, the voice actress [Christine Cavanaugh] passed away and she was such the soul ofย Dexterย I donโt feel comfortable trying to replace her in a way. And weโve done so many of them. I donโt know why thereโs more to be done. You know what I mean? Itโs kind of a weird thing.โ
Genndy Tartakovsky’s career currently has no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Not only did he recently release the R-rated adult animated comedy Fixed with Netflix, but he also has Season 3 of Primal now in the works with Adult Swim along with many other shows and ideas in various stages of development as of the time of this writing. So we might be waiting for a new Dexter’s Laboratory for a very long time.
