New DCU Canon Reveal Makes Its Missing Superman Story Weirder

By referencing scenes from James Gunn’s first DC movie, Peacemaker season 2 poses a huge mystery after 2025’s Superman that raises more questions about the DC Universe canon. James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DCU kicked off with 2024’s animated Creature Commandos series and the recent Superman movie, but the inclusion of Peacemaker season 2 has raised many questions about this new franchise. Season 1 released as part of the old DC Extended Universe, but Peacemaker season 2 is firmly in the DCU, even though it has referenced many events from the titular character’s history.

Peacemaker season 2, episode 2, “A Man Is Only as Good as His Eagle,” includes flashbacks to Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) and Christopher Smith’s (John Cena) battle in 2021’s The Suicide Squad. This was James Gunn’s first DC project, which ultimately led to him being hired as co-CEO of DC Studios, but was a part of the DCEU. Now that scenes from The Suicide Squad have been canonized in the new DCU, however, important questions about Superman’s history have been raised, including whether he was actually shot with a Kryptonite bullet by Bloodsport (Idris Elba), or not.

2025’s Superman movie did not mention David Corenswet’s Superman being shot by Bloodsport, which is unusual if this actually is canon to the DCU. In recent interviews concerning the DCU’s timeline in reference to The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season 1, James Gunn has suggested that everything mentioned and referred to in Peacemaker season 2 is canon, but everything that hasn’t been mentioned isn’t canon yet. The fight between Smith and Flag Jr. and the mission in Corto Maltese have been referenced, making them officially canon in the DCU, but Bloodsport shooting Superman has not.

This could imply that Bloodsport shooting Superman isn’t canon to the DCU โ€“ at least yet. It’s possible that future episodes of Peacemaker season 2 could confirm that this event did, indeed, happen, but then this would make its omission from Superman even weirder. It wouldn’t make sense for Bloodsport to have shot Superman with Kryptonite when Superman didn’t feature any mention of Clark Kent being shot, and even suggested that there was no Kryptonite left on Earth. This is something that James Gunn may address very soon.

Peacemaker season 2 has promoted Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) to the role of ARGUS’ Director, and he’s using this position to investigate the death of his son in The Suicide Squad. As he uncovers more information, it’s possible we could get confirmation about Bloodsport’s relationship with Superman. The title of Peacemaker season 2, episode 3, “Another Rick Up My Sleeve,” implies we might delve deeper into the Flag family, which could reveal more about this confusing mystery and, by extension, the DC Universe’s new canon as a whole.
