James Gunn Explains Why Delayed DCU Release Is Taking So Long

James Gunn has offered an update on one of the DCU‘s long-announced projects that seemed to have gone suspiciously quiet. When Gunn and Peter Safran launched the franchise, it was also announced that multiple projects were in the works. So far, we’ve seen production on The Authority paused, Sgt Rock put on hiatus, and Swamp Thing rocked by cancelation rumors, so it hasn’t all been plain sailing for that initial slate. Several TV shows were also announced, and one that we’ve heard surprisingly little about has now been addressed by Gunn.

A new TV titled Waller, was announced with Viola Davis reprising her role as Amanda Waller from the Suicide Squad movies and Peacemaker. Unfortunately, outside of being announced, there has been little to no news regarding the project. But in a new interview with People, Gunn confirmed the project is still on the way, but is taking a bit longer than expected: “We’re working on it, so we’ll see what happens. Some things have moved faster than others. Waller‘s not been the fastest. But I canโ€™t wait to see Viola put on their Waller pants again.”

Violas Davis, of course, made her debut as the iconic Amanda Waller in the poorly reviewed Suicide Squad. Despite the film’s poor reception from critics and fans alike, Davis’ performance as Waller was hailed as one of the best parts of the film that was otherwise uneven. So much so that Gunn opted to bring the actress back for his The Suicide Squad and later announced her solo television series as part of the DC Studios line-up for the newly crafted DC Universe. The actress also appeared in two episodes from the first season of Peacemaker. Despite appearing in the hit television series, Davis hasn’t reprised her role since.

The DCU Not Rushing Projects is A Good Thing

In the past, Gunn’s co-head, Peter Safran confirmed that they had tried a couple of cracks at the project, but that they hadn’t felt they’d gotten it right just yet. And both DC heads have been vocal about ensuring they don’t move forward on projects unless they are comfortable with the scripts. They don’t want to go into production without a solid script that is ready for filming, and they don’t want to make a project simply to ensure they follow through on previously announced projects. Their focus is on quality, and this means moving forward with projects that may have been announced later, including the upcoming Clayface movie, which is the next feature up for DC Studios. That should fill DC fans with confidence that Waller is going to be worth the wait.

It remains to be seen when Waller eventually comes to fruition, but when it finally does, it’ll be when both Gunn and Safran are confident in the story they’ve developed for Davis’ character. Davis’ take on Waller was one of the best parts of the DCEU’s most uneven release in Suicide Squad, and her return after the semi-reboot for Gunn’s own rebootquel and then Peacemaker was equally strong. She deserves the chance to headline the right project.
