Did Doctor Who's Season Finale Confirm A Female Doctor Is Coming?
Last night, fans of Doctor Who watched as Peter Capaldi exited the BBC show's main run. The 12th Doctor bid farewell to his companion Bill shortly after crossing paths with the Master for what seemed like the last time. With just Doctor Who's Christmas special left, fans are wondering who will replace Capaldi as the Doctor come December.
However, if the show's recent finale is to be believed, then Doctor Who may have already dropped a hint about the 13th Doctor.
Towards the end ofDoctor Who's season eleven finale, fans watched as Bill stepped forward to fight some unknown baddies expected to pop out of a black hole. The Doctor and Master watched from the side, prompting the latter to ask, "Will the future be all girl?"
"We can only hope," the Doctor answers. And, of course, the comment made the entire Whovian fandom explode.
Taking to social media, fans began speculating whether the comment was a direct nod to Capaldi's replacement. Fans have been asking for some time now for the BBC to have a female Doctor. Over the show's long history, every lead for Doctor Who has been a male, and women have questioned why a Time Lady isn't as feasible as a Time Lord.
Thanks to exiting showrunner Steven Moffat, Doctor Who has canonically stated the Doctor can regenerate into a woman. In fact, fans have even had a chance to fall for a Time Lady thanks to Missy, the female regeneration of the Master whom began traveling with Bill and the Doctor.
So far, the BBC has kept mum about any and all things concerning the 13th Doctor. The network will likely keep updates about casting quiet until its Doctor Who Christmas special comes closer, but fans do know one thing; Someone has already been hired to play the Doctor. According to Russel T. Davies, the former showrunner said he learned an actor has been tapped to play the 13th Doctor, but the creator stopped short before he accidentally revealed any spoiler-ish details.

Steven Moffat will hand over the reins of Doctor Who to Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall for Season 11. Chibnall is a longtime Doctor Who fans who has written for the series during the Russell T. Davies time and acted as head writer on the Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood.

Doctor Who Season 10 introduced Pearl Mackie as the Doctor's new companion Bill Potts. The newcomer replaced the previous companion Clara Oswald once Jenna Coleman left after Season 9. Whether Bill will join the new Doctor in Doctor Who Season 11 is still unknown, but fans don't seem to think the companion will carry on with the Time Lord for much longer.
