Hulu’s Major Original Animated Series is Jumping to Netflix

When it comes to the animation world, streaming services are recognizing that there is serious money to be made across the board. Whether it comes from Japan with the popularity of anime or by creating original projects out of North America, platforms like Hulu are regularly returning to the animation well. In a surprising move, Hulu has confirmed that one of its biggest animated originals will no longer be exclusive to its platform. Beginning at the end of this month, a Hulu show is making the leap to Netflix for the first time ever.

Solar Opposites will arrive on Netflix on September 28th, later this month, with the story of the extraterrestrials trying to live on Earth, bringing its seasons from Hulu to its competitor. First premiering in 2020, the show has five seasons to its name so far, with the final season set to arrive on Hulu on October 13th next month. As of the writing of this article, we aren’t entirely sure just how many seasons will hit Netflix, and whether the final season will also land on Hulu’s competition. Korvo, Yumyulack, Terry, and Jesse have had a wild ride so far and plenty of new viewers will now have the chance to check it out.

Solar Opposites’ Farewell

Regarding the upcoming sixth and final season, we here at ComicBook.com had the opportunity to speak with Solar Opposites’ co-creator Mike McMahan regarding the cancellation of the series. In our discussion, McMahan joked about receiving the news, “We woke up one day and we said to ourselves, “We’ve been cancelled forcefully by the network, so we should probably make this the last season. We could keep doing it, but since nobody will be paying us to do it, it would be pretty rudimentary. The artists need to eat and have medicine.”

On top of this comment, the co-creator hinted at what is to come for the alien family next month, “We knew this was going to be our final season going into it, but we think of it as like the end of our first chapter or something like that. So you get a lot of cool culmination of long-running jokes, storylines like The Wall, Silver Cops, and it’s all in.” Joining in the discussion was executive producer Josh Bycel, who confirmed that they originally didn’t know that this would be the last season of the series, “We actually didn’t totally know that it was going to be the last season, but it’s done in a way that I think as Mike said could be the end of the first chapter, but we really were able to bring the Silver Cops, The Wall, all back to at the end of the day, the Solars.”

As for the final season, Hulu released an official description regarding Solar Opposites’ grand finale, “Witness the wild chaos of this unhinged alien family as they get into hilarious mischief, all while the final chapter of an epic drama unfolds for the shrunken people they’ve imprisoned in their Wall. As the ‘Solar Opposites’ navigate their unforgettable farewell, expect laugh-out-loud surprises at every turn.”
