When it comes to Supernatural, the devil is used to being on top of things. Lucifer may have the Winchester Brothers to deal with, but the King of Hell is not one who can be taken down that easily. However, it seems that the show’s current season will pit Lucifer in his biggest battle yet.

According to Mark Pellegrino, the battle appears that it will take place within Lucifer.

During a recent interview with ComicBook, the Supernatural star opened up about the trials Lucifer will face in the world he’s now trapped in. The devil is stuck within an apocalyptic world with Mary Winchester, but the arc angel Michael is not willing to let Lucifer walk around unchecked. When asked about Lucifer’s battles this season, Pellegrino admitted he thinks the devil is about to get in over his head.

“I think he’s going to respond to [the world] with his typical stubborn defiance. I think one of his virtues is an indomitable will regardless of what conditions he finds himself in. I do think that for the first time, and we’ve seen Lucifer in some pretty hairy situations, but I think for the first time we see him in over his head,” the actor explained.

“I think it forces a different part of his character to the surface, which is a vulnerable part of his character and that’s going to force him to look in directions he’s never looked before and to act in ways that he’s never probably acted before. It’s going to give us some cool surprises.”

Lucifer has found himself stuck in a world where his counter has already been struck down, so the devil will have to tread lightly whilst trapped. However, the new world may be safer for Lucifer than his original one. Asmodeus took up Lucifer’s throne in the latest episode of Supernatural, and Pellegrino said the devil will have to contend with his dissenters when – and if – he returns.

“I think those other players are going to impose themselves and their agendas on Lucifer and he’s going to have no choice but to deal with them,” the actor confessed. “I don’t know that when the time comes he is necessarily in a position to want to deal with them.”

Supernatural airs on The CW on Thursdays at 7:00 CST.
