SyFy has renewed The Magicians for a third, 13-episode season, set to debut in 2018.

The series is produced by Universal Cable Productions and has seen its ratings grow during its second season. The Magicians is up year-over-year in all key demos (P18-49 +15%, P18-34 +23%, P25-54 +9% and +6% among P2+), and has doubled its social media engagement, according to Syfy.
Based upon Lev Grossman’s best-selling books, The Magicians centers on Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) and his 20-something friends as they discover their magical abilities at Brakebills University, a secret grad school specializing in magic. While there, they come to the realization that the fantasies they read about as children are all too real, and unwittingly invite a malevolent entity from the other side into their lives.
Heading into Season 2, this group of unlikely heroes have been thrust into even more dangerous and unfamiliar territory and must draw upon their novice skills to defeat a threat that could destroy the magical world itself. Driven by power, revenge, and survival, they learn that those who entered the hauntingly beautiful world of Fillory will never be the same as those who leave.

The Magicians stars Jason Ralph, Stella Maeve, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, Summer Bishil, Rick Worthy and Jade Tailor. John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Chris Fisher and Groundswell Productions’ Michael London and Janice Williams executive produce.
SyFy orders The Magicians to series in May 2015. The first episode premiers in December of the same year as a special preview. The Magicians had its proper series premiere in January 2016 and was renewed for a second season in February 2016. The Magicians Season 2 premiere in January 2017.
Lev Grossman’s The Magicians debuted in 2009. The novel was critically acclaimed and led to two sequels, The Magician King in 2011 and The Magician’s Land in 2014.
The concept of The Magicians has been compared to JK Rowling’s Harry Potter, with Brakebills University serving the same purpose as Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry in Rowling’s Wizarding World. The key difference between the two is that Quentin Coldwater is old enough to drink something stronger than Butterbeer. As such the series is able to take on much more adult themes, including mental health and sexual assault, and often deconstructs the fantasy genre itself, including magical school stories, fairy tales, and fantasy roleplaying games.
The Magicians airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on SyFy. This Wednesday, SyFy will air the penultimate episode of The Magicians Season 2. The season two finale of The Magicians will air Wednesday, April 19.
