With the continued growth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, audiences get new looks at unseen corners of its world with each new property that rolls out. We've traveled the country, the globe, and the Nine Realms. So, where how does a character like Peter Parker fit into this grand universe set up through a dozen movies and a few Netflix series?

At San Diego Comic Con, ComicBook.com had the chance to pose that question to Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts. Watts, excited about bringing Spider-Man to the big screen following his debut in Captain America: Civil War, makes Spider-Man's corner of the universe sound more like the contained type of feeling we've seen from Daredevil and Jessica Jones than a globetrotting, world-saving Avengers adventure.

"I think of it as the ground floor," Watts says. "If the Avengers Tower is the penthouse and we know what it's like to be a millionaire, billionaire playboy to be Tony or we know what it's like to be a God on another planet, that's the penthouse level of the MCU. Spider-Man is the ground floor. What does a high school in the MCU look like? What does riding the subway in the MCU feel like? Spider-Man seems like the most perfect opportunity because he's the most regular person in the canon that I thought he was a great chance to show what that angle of the MCU feels like."

Perhaps Spider-Man could be the missing link between the Avengers and the Defenders. Having fought alongside the likes of Iron Man and the other Marvel heavy hitters, going home to New York increases the likelihood of running into Daredevil, Jessica Jones, or Luke Cage.

Spider-Man: Homecoming may contain itself to Peter Parker's teenage world but its cast is an impressive one. Watts has the privilege of directing Tom Holland as Parker but also Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, and Michael Keaton (who plays the villainous Vulture).

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters July 7, 2017.
