Scott Derrickson Did Doctor Strange Right, According To Stan Lee

In just a couple months, the world will be introduced to Doctor Strange through the big screen. The Sorcerer Supreme promises to show a brand-new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as it plans to bring magic to the superhero-ridden franchise. Based on an eponymous comic series, some longtime readers have worried whether Doctor Strange would translate well on film. But, now, those fans are being reassured by none other than Stan Lee. The legendary writer recently told fans he thinks director Scott Derrickson did Doctor Strange right.

Speaking at Fan Expo Canada, Stan spoke during a Q&A and told the packed crowd he believed Doctor Strange was done justice. The writer praised Derrickson's faith vision before going on to perform two incantations sourced from the comics. However, Stan did reveal he was holding a grudge against Derrickson over one thing. It seems the icon wanted to play the good wizard himself as he said, "You know, I'm disappointed I wasn't cast as Doctor Strange. I think I'm strange enough."

For many fans, Stan's words will bring about a sigh of relief. The lesser-known comic has a cult following of fans who've been following its progression since the 60s, so they're pleased to hear their favorite mystical warrior is being treated well. Derrickson is one of those fans who's plugged into thrill that is Doctor Strange, and he spoke with ComicBook.com's Brandon Davis earlier this year about his upcoming film.

The two talked at San Diego Comic Con where Derrickson said Doctor Strange would usher in a whole new vibe to the MCU. "This is the movie where Marvel goes full weird," he teased. "That full weirdness is written in the Ditko images, the Jack Kirby images, the early Doctor Strange comic book panels that are still to this day so mind blowing."

Derrickson went on to say, "What the comics did was, they brought with Doctor Strange an extra dimension into psychadelia, mysticism, and spirituality and all these very 60's things and broke open the Marvel comic book universe into the Marvel multiverse. I think Doctor Strange is going to be the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. It's really serving the same function that the comic did. Even though it was a weird aberration as a comic book, I think it was a real linchpin in the comics. It ended up being decades of new stories and I think this movie will do the same thing."

Between Stan's endorsement and recent Doctor Strange rumors, it certainly looks like fans are ready to see the MCU's so-called linchpin. So, for now, we'll just have to wait until the film hits theaters to see whether Stan's words ring true.

Doctor Strange is slated to release on November 4 2016.
