When Guardians of the Galaxy debuted, it didn't just give the world a lovable bunch of a-holes and a fun adventure. The film also opened the Marvel Cinematic Universe up to a much larger world; it went from technically being the "Marvel Cinematic Earth" to finally truly living up to its name (Thor notwithstanding). With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on the horizon, Marvel Studios is open to expanding that world further. In the pages of Marvel Comics, this particular Guardians team was assembled when Marvel Cosmic became its own line of comics, including characters like Nova, Quasar, and many more getting solo series. Could the same happen in film?
"Yeah, for sure," president Kevin Feige told reporters on a set visit last spring, though he did offer a caveat. "I don't know about branching off from this, but certainly inhabiting similar areas to this."
Feige mentioned Thor: Ragnarok by name as an example, but expanded beyond that saying, "A lot of our upcoming movies will be as much up here as they are on Earth, starting with Thor: Ragnarok." The film will be every bit a cosmic adventure, it sounds, as Guardians.
"There are three scenes on Earth in Thor: Ragnarok. Everything else is Asgard, and worlds that certainly, in Thor lingo, are beyond the nine realms. There are planets that we spend a lot of time on in Thor: Ragnarok that certainly people would say, oh, that's sort of like the Guardians world; they're just other areas of the Marvel cosmic universe," he said.
Of course that plural in "a lot of our upcoming movies" is probably the most fun part of the tease. There, Feige is referring likely to Avengers: Infinity War, which will see the entire MCU uniting against the very cosmic threat of Thanos, and even beyond that with Captain Marvel and the second Infinity War film. The Marvel Cosmic universe should expand quite a bit in the next couple of years.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
