X-23 Creator Never Wanted Her To Become The New Wolverine

When Logan died in the comics, many felt that X-23 would take assume his role in the Marvel Universe, but they didn't necessarily think that Marvel would literally make her Wolverine. That's what they did, though, and so far it's worked out quite well, with All-New Wolverine being one of the top books Marvel is putting out.

Still, X-23's original creator Craig Kyle wishes that Marvel had perhaps gone a different route. Kyle created the character for the X-Men: Evolution animated series, and thanks to her popularity she eventually made the transition to the comics. In an interview with THR, Kyle was asked what he thought of her new role in the books.

"I was happy when after the "Death of Wolverine" she was going to step into the role. That said, I never wanted her to put on Wolverine's costume and take his name, because she's not Wolverine. Wolverine is Wolverine and no one will ever be him. He is this extraordinary, beautiful, perfect thing. I don't want to take away from him and I don't want to strip her of her individuality. I love that she's taken that role. I just wish she could do it in her own costume, that's all."

It's understandable for the creator to want Laura to find her own way, but at the same time, it just made too much sense to pass up. Logan has been grooming her for the later half of her life, both as part of the X-Men and X-Force, so it stands to reason that she would want to embrace his legacy. Ironically this comes on the heels of an announced costume redesign, which is inspired from her X-Force days. Kyle does enjoy what they are doing with the character however and is equally happy with her portrayal by Dafne Keen in Logan.

Logan takes place in the year 2024, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.

Logan is now playing in theaters.
