There is no man in Hollywood more versed in the art of cameos than Stan Lee. The iconic comic book writer is known for his eccentric personality, wide glasses, and innumerable cameos throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Lee has taken part in each of Marvel’s films since Iron Man debuted back in 2008, and fans have come to wonder whether the man may actually be playing the same character in each films. The fan-theory began to catch fire in recent years, but no word was ever given to validate it. That is, until now.
Recently, the head of Marvel Studios was asked about the fan-theory regarding Lee and his MCU cameos. Kevin Feige was asked if the icon’s parts in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 were meant to confirm the theory’s truth, and the producer said yes.
“Yes, we always thought it would be fun. Stan Lee clearly exists, you know, above and apart from the reality of all the films. So the notion that he could be sitting there on a cosmic pit stop during the jump gate sequence in Guardians was something very fun โ James had that idea and we shot that cameo and loved it so much, you know, you see it a couple of times in the movie.”
“It wasn’t in for a long time and we put it back in towards the end of the process where he references that time he was a Federal Express agent โ we thought it would be fun to put that in there because that really says, so wait a minute, he’s this same character who’s popped up in all these films.”
In the Guardians sequel, fans are let in on the fact that Lee has been playing the same character throughout all the MCU films. The film sees Lee appear twice as his first nod is shown when Yondu, Rocket, and Kraglin are shown hopping through realms. One of the places they travel through sees Lee sitting with a group of Watchers as he regales them with his tales from Earth. Then, in one of the film’s several post-credit scenes, Lee is shown talking still before the Watchers grow bored of the character. In the scenes, Lee makes direct nods to his past entrances to other MCU titles, confirming the man has been playing the same character all along. But, sadly, the Watchers just aren’t too interested in the man’s shenanigans.
Poor Stan.
