According to Drew Goddard, the director of Cabin in the Woods, “the studio wants to do” a sequel. “They’ve come to us.” When Goddard says “us” he is referring to Joss Whedon (Avengers: Age of Ultron), who co-wrote the film with Goddard.

“The funny part is, I don’t think we planned that movie to do a sequel, you know?” Goddard told Den of Geek. The reporter echoed Goddard’s point by pointing out how the film’s ending didn’t leave room for a sequel. “It doesn’t,” he added. “But that being said, the fun thing about Cabin is, the rules are pretty crazy. We get away with a lot of crazy stuff. So, I’m sure we could figure it out if we got inspired to. I know Joss and I both feel like we don’t want to tarnish what we did with the first one. With a sequel, we’d only do it if it made us laugh hard enough, I suppose.”

He finished up by saying that he and Joss don’t have anything “in the hopper” at the moment, however, he wouldn’t be surprised if one day they woke up and decide to take a crack at it.

The horror-comedy was supposed to be released in 2010, but MGM came down with a bad case of bankruptcy and put the film on the shelf. It was later sold to Lionsgate, which distributed the film in 2012. Critics loved it, giving it a 92% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences dug it as well, grossing $66M at the worldwide box office, against a $30M budget.
