It looks like Henry Cavill's Superman is about to fly up, up, and away in an upcoming sequel to Man of Steel. In an exclusive report, The Wrap has confirmed the film has gone into 'active development.'

Released back in 2013, Man of Steel initially received mixed reviews from critics but has since become known as a defining Superman adaptation. The film went on to earn big-time at the box office with a $688 million gross. Many fans were convinced a Man of Steel sequel was all but assured following the first film's success, but Warner Bros. has kept suspiciously quiet about the project for years - well, until now.

A source familiar with the project told The Wrap, "Superman is a top priority for the studio and getting the character right for audiences is of tantamount importance." Of course, the studio is also busy juggling a slew of other superhero films such as The Justice League and Wonder Woman. Warner Bros. most recently rolled out Suicide Squad this past weekend, stunning critics and fans with its record-breaking opening. The super-villain flick opened to over $135 million to make it the third-highest opening film of the year.

With a Man of Steel sequel now in active development, fanboys and girls all over the Internet are now rejoicing so hard that even the spirit of Krypton could hear their celebrations. However, fans were teased about the sequel's possibility before when DC Entertainment's film slate was released a while back. Warner Bros. did note their calendar allowed for possible "standalone Batman and Superman films."

Clearly, it looks like Warner Bros. wants to take another chance on one of the world's most iconic superheroes. Henry Cavill's most recent role as Clark Kent/Superman was seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice where the actor's work was favorably reviewed. Despite the film's rocky launch, Superman stood as one of the project's redeeming factors, and fans rallied around Cavill.

Obviously, there's no release date associated with this Man of Steel sequel, but Warner Bros. does have two untitled DC films slated for release in 2018 and 2019 respectively. The Wrap's source did also say the Superman sequel would likely arrive after a standalone Batman film, perhaps one directed by Ben Affleck.
