Dragon Ball Super Says Universe 7 Is Smaller Than You Think

For Son Goku, there is no greater aspiration than to become the strongest fighter of all-time. The Saiyan has lofty dreams when it comes to power, and the protagonist has managed to make a name for himself over the years. From Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball Super, Goku has become known for his gullible charm and unwavering interest to fight anyone who crosses his path. Just within Universe 7, Goku is considered to be an imposing warrior who is only challenged by Vegeta.

Fans of the anime have rallied behind the title, giving Goku praise for his stubborn skills. If Goku can be the strongest fighter in an entire universe, then the hero is surely worthy of praise. However, in the most recent episode of Dragon Ball Super, the anime retconned some very important information about the size of Universe 7 - and fans are not happy.

In the most recent episode of the anime, fans listened in shock as the Kaioshin of the universe said only 28 planets were left in their system. With worlds such as Sadal and Old Namek destroyed, only a few planets were left alive, so Goku and his squad would have to comprise the universe's team for the Omni-Kings' tournament.

For fans, the number is a shockingly low figure as Universe 7 has always been described to be much more grand. Some have tried to figure out how the Kaioshin came up with the soft number using Majin Buu and Freeza. The former villain canonically destroyed hundreds of planets before Goku stopped him. Not only that, but Majin Buu also wiped out many Kaioshin save for a few, leaving the universe without overseers to reseed the dwindling system. If you pair Buu's tyranny with Beerus and his love for destruction, you can see what Universe 7 may have bled out life too quickly. Oh, and Freeza's race didn't make the situation any better.

However, even with those factors in play, it seems impossible for Universe 7 to lose so much land so quickly - especially for the anime's current timeline. During Freeza's reign, the planet broker was said to have about 400 worlds under his thumb to resell and have his way with. And, in just the Milky Way galaxy, the Galactic King is said to rule over 38 planets which Jaco works for - and that's just a dip in Universe 7.

So far, the number seems to be little more than a retcon to keep Goku's squad in the limelight, but fans aren't pleased with the choice. Having such a small universe complicates the scale and mythos of Dragon Ball. And, as you might expect, longtime fans of the franchise aren't pleased to see that foundation messed with.

Dragon Ball Super's "Universal Survival" saga is part of the recent simulcast agreement that sites like Crunchyroll and Funimation have scored. Dragon Ball Super airs on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami will begin airing the English dub on Adult Swim Saturdays at 11:30 p.m.
