2018 is just around the corner, and the anime fandom is looking back at its last year of hits. Dozens of anime series left their mark in 2017, but many of those shows paled in comparison to the success of some top-tier anime films. ComicBook.com’s Golden Issue awards are here to highlight those special movies and give one of them our biggest honor.

However, if you had hoped Studio Ghibli would make this list, then you need to think again.

Recently, the staff at ComicBook.com pooled together our votes to select the best anime film of 2017. Some strong opinions and even stronger language were used to narrow down our choices, but the staff agreed there was only one movie that could take this year’s top honor.

And the winner of Best Anime Film isโ€ฆ

Your Name!

If you are a savvy anime fan, you will realize that Your Name got its initial release in 2016. The film debuted in Japan way before U.S. fans could get a hold of it, but 2017 ushered Your Name abroad back in April. The international release sealed Your Name‘s timely spot on ComicBook.com’s list, and it isn’t hard to see why.

Your Name not only beat out Spirited Away to become the highest-grossing anime film of all-time, but its artistry is one that cannot be ignored. The film’s animation is as ethereal as it is hyperrealistic, and its supernatural romance is one you won’t see coming. Shinkai beautifully captured his lead characters as they embarked on an unprecedented journey, and fans are anxiously awaiting the director’s next project.
