2025’s Best Romance Anime Has Disappointing Update for Fans

Saka Mikami’s beloved high school romance series, The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity, released its anime adaptation this summer, almost four years after its debut. Even before the anime’s release, the series had a considerably large fanbase, and it only grew wider after the gorgeous adaptation by CloverWorks. Unfortunately, the series took longer to debut overseas after an unexpected delay by Netflix. The first season reached its conclusion in Japan this weekend, but there have been no updates regarding an anime sequel. The official YouTube channel of Aniplex released a special video to commemorate the finale, but shared no information about future projects.

Usually, a famous series like this one would announce a sequel right after the broadcast in Japan is finished, but that hasn’t happened so far. Even the anime’s official X handle only shared information about the season finale and nothing else. Although famous unofficial sources, such as @MangaMoguraRE on X, claim that the franchise has a special event scheduled for November 1st, 2025, there’s no official confirmation yet. Considering that the manga has released over 160 chapters so far, there’s a lot of content left to be covered. While it may take a bit longer to announce a second season, the series is popular enough to anticipate future seasons.

What Is the Plot of The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity?

The story follows the students of the prestigious all-girls Kikyo Private Academy and Chidori Public High School, who appear to live in two different worlds despite the schools being located next to each other. Both schools can’t see eye to eye, and that goes for both the students and the staff. The series centers on Rintaro Tsumugi, a student at the infamous Chidori High, who often gets misunderstood due to his intimidating face. He’s used to people treating him as dangerous, and going to Chidori High only makes them wary of him since the students there are known for being delinquents.

However, he’s surprised when Kaoruko Waguri, a regular customer at his parents’ cake shop, doesn’t appear frightened and even tries to initiate a conversation with him. The two were barely getting to know each other, but things take a turn for the worse when Rintaro realizes that Kaoruko goes to Kikyo Academy and that interacting with her will only cause her unnecessary problems. The story continues as the duo navigate the social obstacles getting in the way of their budding romance, not only because of the differences in their schools’ statuses, but also because of the students and the faculty.

The manga has released 19 volumes in Japan so far, with the 20th one scheduled for October 9th, 2025. However, only eight of them have received English versions, which are available for sale on the official Kodansha website. Volume 9 will release its English version on October 7th, 2025. The first season adapts 39 chapters of the manga, so you can continue reading from Chapter 40. All the chapters are available digitally on Kodanshaโ€™s official K Manga app.
