The next big thing in fantasy anime could be arriving on our screens in 2026. Following the incredible success of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Dungeon Meshi, Bug Fiilms’ Witch Hat Atelier is looking set to round out the Big Three of fantasy anime. The anime, based on the seinen manga by Kamome Shirahama, was originally set to premiere in late 2025. However, it was recently delayed to early 2026 to improve its quality. Fans are of two minds regarding the delay, with some feeling anxious, while others are welcoming of the setback if it means the quality will be higher. But with the extra months, it means that Bug Films can nail the three most important elements of Witch Hat Atelier.

Witch Hat Atelier‘s manga was first serialized in Kodansha’s Morning Two magazine in 2016. The manga is ongoing, with 14 volumes available at the time of publication. Bug Films’ anime adaptation was first announced in 2024, with a stunning first look trailer. The first glimpse at Coco and the world of Witch Hat Atelier in animation has given fans a lot of hope about the show. But there are three major hurdles the series will have to overcome if it wants to live up to the exceptional quality of the manga.
1) The Art Style

Let’s get the most obvious aspect out of the way first. Shirahama’s manga is one of the most beautifully illustrated fantasy manga out there (Kamome Shirahama made our Top 10 list of the best seinen manga artists of all time!). Her fineline style and intricately detailed illustrations make the fantastical world, inspired by medieval Europe, explode off the page. The setting itself is gorgeous, but when magic is involved, fans know that some beautiful panels are just a page-turn away.
The first trailer for Witch Hat Atelier‘s anime set a lot of fans’ worries about the art style at ease. You’d think it would be obvious that an anime should remain faithful to the original art style. But, as Berserk fans know all too well, anime studios often lose sight of what made the artwork so special. Judging from that first trailer, Witch Hat Atelier‘s anime has the potential to be stunning. But only time will tell if the entire anime can live up to the artistic quality of the manga.
2) The Worldbuilding & Magic System

As well as stunning art, Witch Hat Atelier has one of the most beautifully simple magic systems in manga. Magic is created through drawing spells and incantations with ink. The completion of these drawings makes the spells work, and the better they’re drawn, the more powerful the spell. On the printed page, this goes hand-in-hand with Shirahama’s fineline art style. Not only does the anime have to execute the visual style of the magic system, but also its physical weight.
But magic isn’t the only fantastical element in Witch Hat Atelier. As well as witches and wizards, there are also various magical creatures that roam the world. The dragon is the most famous example among the fan base. But there are also the adorable Myrphons, Pegasus, and the reptilian Guardian of the Tower of Tomes.
Again, it sounds reductive to simply say that Bug Films has to get these elements right. But so much of the mystery and wonder of Witch Hat Atelier is closely tied to its fantastical elements โ it is a fantasy anime, after all.
3) The Emotional Plot

When reading Witch Hat Atelier, it’s easy to get lost in the gorgeous art and clever use of the magic system. But even the best artists can’t save an underwhelming story. Thankfully, Coco’s journey to learn magic is closely tied to her incredibly emotional past. Without diving into spoilers, she has a very tragic reason for wanting to learn magic, one that hit readers right in the feels during their first read-throughs.
Bug Films’ anime adaptation can’t lose sight of the story at the core of Witch Hat Atelier. The aforementioned Frieren and Dungeon Meshi have already set the blueprint for combining jaw-dropping visuals with fantasy and retaining the emotional core of the story. With the template already laid out, it should (in theory) be easy for Bug Films to achieve the same feat with Witch Hat Atelier.
Witch Hat Atelier is currently scheduled to premiere in 2026. An exact release date hasn’t been set.
