Attack on Titan: Requiem Hit With Legal Subpoenas From Kodansha, Erasing Previous Videos

Attack on Titan is over, as both the manga and anime have revealed no plans to continue the story of the Scout Regiment. While Hajime Isayama’s brutal story planted the seeds for a potential future story, fans hoping for a new story in this vein might be disappointed. Unfortunately, fans have recently received more bad news as the fan project, Attack on Titan: Requiem, has run into a major roadblock from the anime franchise’s owners. The company Kodansha has “filed subpoenas” in relation to Studio Eclypse’s fan creation, leaving the future of the project in question.

Attack on Titan: Requiem was released for free on January 15th this year, creating a story that serves as an alternate ending to the original anime. Studio Eclypse released the project for free, but this fact apparently wasn’t enough to save it from Kodansha’s ire. In an official statement, Eclypse released the following official statement, “There’s (like usual) some misinformation going on about this. It seems @X was asked to take down our videos off the platform and they denied there was Copyright Infringement, so we didn’t receive any type of notification or warning. Apparently Kodansha filed the subpoenas to be able send us the DMCA directly. We NOW have taken down ALL the videos cited in the legal document as we did on Youtube when they asked, we just wish this would’ve been notified a month ago when it happened instead of finding out like this.”

The Requiem is in Danger

Eclypse followed up with this statement to confirm their original intent in creating Attack on Titan: Requiem. The animators reiterate that they are giant fans of the source material “Lastly, for all the people spreading false statements, we have never criticized or tried to replace the original canon ending in any way, and we also never accepted donations for this specific project. You can check out our very first tweet and our history of posts and replies regarding it. Fan fiction is meant to explore different outcomes from the stories we love, please don’t make it seem like something it’s not.”

As for the story of Requiem, the fifteen-minute-long segment imagines a world where Eren Jaeger takes a far different approach to the grand finale of the Attack on Titan series. Rather than eliminating the vast majority of humanity, this alternate ending sees Eren reuniting with his father and promising to “keep moving forward.” While the fan project wasn’t a full series that “recreated the wheel,” it showed the talent on display when it came to the animators working on the video itself. Luckily for “AOT” fans, Hajime Isayama has been willing to return to the series following the finale, with a prime example being the short story, Attack on Titan: Bad Boy, which looked into the past of fan-favorite character Levi.
