Of the many original animated series that Netflix has created in its history, we’d be hard-pressed to think of one that hit the ground running like Blue Eye Samurai. While the series had little groundswell to start, the story of Mizu roared to life and found a passionate audience. With the first season ending on something of a cliffhanger, many animation enthusiasts have been waiting to learn what lies in wait for the titular sword wielder. Luckily, in the build-up to Netflix’s participation at this year’s Annecy Animation Festival, the streaming service has unveiled what season two will cover as well as a new look at Mizu as her quest for revenge continues.

Netflix revealed that Mizu will be in London for this season, following the events of season one, while the series will find ways to travel back to Japan thanks to the star’s supporting cast. For season two, here’s how the streaming service describes what’s in store for the Blue Eye Samurai: “In season 2, Mizu’s bloody quest continues in London, where she faces new friends, old foes, and her own demons. In Japan, Akemi and Taigen navigate Edo Castle under a dangerous new Shogun, while Ringo searches for new purpose.” You can check out the first images from the second season below.

Blue Eye Samurai Will Return

Last year, Blue Eye Samurai co-creators Michael Green and Amber Noizumi teased Mizu’s arrival in a new part of the world following season one. Hinting at her London excursion, Noizumi teased that while the locale might have changed, much remains the same: “Mizu’s journey remains the same. Revenge is her religion. She believes that at least two of the men that she’s out to kill are going to be somewhere in this magical place called London. There are also going to be maybe some people you thought died, who maybe are still alive.”
As of the writing of this article, Netflix has yet to confirm whether Blue Eye Samurai will return this year, as the co-creators have stated that the animation process for the show is a “long and detailed one.” Following the premiere of the Netflix original, the animated series garnered some major attention during award season. To date, the animated series has won at the American Cinema Editors Awards, the Annie Awards, The Emmy Awards, and the Artios Awards. Mizu’s story of revenge was also nominated at both the Astra TV Awards and the Peabody Awards, proving that there has been a major reaction from both critics and viewers alike to the Netflix original. Obviously, the possibility exists for more awards to be won with the upcoming season two release, though the co-creators have stated in the past that they would love for a three-season run, with a possible spin-off down the line. Only time will tell just how far Netflix takes Mizu’s story.
