Boruto fans are currently in the midst of Naruto Gaiden being animated, with Sakura already being captured by Uchiha Shin. As a result, Sasuke, Naruto, Sarada, and Cho-Cho had to meet an old acutance in order to find Shin. Step in Orochimaru, who hasn't been seen since Naruto Shippuden ended.

However, this was not the Orochimaru that fans have known for all these years, with Orochimaru looking quite different. From the moment Orochimaru stepped onto the screen the difference was evident, with the man not looking anywhere near as masculine anymore. Orochimaru looked much younger as well, with Naruto and Sasuke commenting on that point, however; it was clear why this was the case.

Orochimaru has continued his forbidden jutsu's that allow him to live forever, which was revealed in his battle against the 3rd Hokage in Hiruzen Sarutobi. In addition, Orochimaru looks as if he has stolen the body of a female, as he clearly looks more feminine than before. From that point, Orochimaru asked Naruto how a certain boy was going at the academy, which clearly points to Orochimaru's son Mitzuki. That also has made many fans wonder how exactly Mitzuki is Orochimaru's son, however; the female look may give us some clues.

Ultimately, it was a very interesting return for the once evil Orochimaru who despite being pardoned by Konoha, has remained under the watchful eyes of Yamato. Orochimaru is one of the Three Legendary Sanin's who fought their way into fame during the 2nd Great Shinobi War, as well as the 3rd Great War later on. After becoming a missing nin, attacking Konoha, joining the Akatsuki, slaughtering thousands of people for various forbidden jutsu's and as well as killing the 3rd Hokage and 4th Kazekage, Orochimaru was somehow pardoned for all crimes.

This was largely because of his change in nature and his efforts in the 4th Great Shinobi War, where he revived Tsunade after her battle with Madara and brought the first four Hokage back to join the fight with his reanimation jutsu. Orochimaru's involvement at that time meant Konoha could trust him enough not to attack them again, which may make him a powerful ally in the future once more. That is most likely why Orochimaru was pardoned, it is because he may be helpful when another major threat arrives.
