Major Crunchyroll Movie Will Release Earlier Than Expected

Crunchyroll hasn’t just been one of the biggest movers and shakers in the anime streaming world, the platform has been taking the silver screen by storm. Next week, for example, the company is bringing Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle to North America following its major run in Japanese theaters. In a wild new twist, one of the biggest anime films that Crunchyroll is bringing to North America this fall is getting a release date, moving up the movie to allow anime fans to catch it earlier than expected.

Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc is scheduled to hit Japan on September 19th this fall, and while it was originally set to arrive in North America on October 29th, Crunchyroll is moving up the Western release. Denji’s upcoming cinematic adventure is set to hit theaters on October 24th, pitting the Chainsaw Devil against the Bomb Devil for the first time. From this move, it’s clear that Crunchyroll has confidence in the bloody entry in the shonen world, especially with Studio MAPPA firing on all engines when it comes to Tatsuki Fujimoto’s work. While the streaming service has yet to reveal when the Chainsaw Man movie will arrive on its platform, it’s a safe bet that we’ll see Denji and his fellow devil hunters on the small screen.

The Bomb Devil Approaches

If you want a deeper look at Denji’s return, here’s how Crunchyroll describes the upcoming film, “Denji became Chainsaw Man, a boy with a devil’s heart, and is now part of Special Division 4’s devil hunters. After a date with Makima, the woman of his dreams, Denji takes shelter from the rain. There he meets Reze, a girl who works in a café.”

For shonen fans wondering if this movie will be a precursor to a second season of Chainsaw Man, we here at ComicBook.com had the opportunity to speak with Studio MAPPA president Manabu Otsuka about this very topic. During our discussion, Otsuka revealed that they don’t know if the production house will keep Denji on the big or small screen moving forward. Here’s what Manabu had to say, “We don’t know if this is going to be the trend moving forward, that we don’t know. I think what we are going to do, like with did with Reze, is look at the next story and decide from there. If the next arc works better as a film or if it works better as a television season, we’ll decide on that, but we haven’t reached that decision as of yet.”

In talking about bringing Chainsaw Man to the silver screen, Otsuka also went into detail regarding the biggest challenges of this cinematic transition, “In terms of making an animation, that doesn’t change that much from the small screen to a theatrical release, creating it for cinema. Transitioning from television to cinema is actually far more demanding when it comes to the sound, we have to make everything for the theater. It’s a lot of extra work, but we really think fans will enjoy that. The composer of the soundtrack, Kensuke Ushio, is having a hard time with the film because it’s giving him so much extra work. At the same time, we truly believe that the fans will enjoy the soundtrack here.”
