Today, Netflix gave fans their first-look at its upcoming take on Death Note. The live-action movie will take Tsugumi Ohba's iconic franchise and give it a western take. Stars like Nat Wolff and Lakeith Stanfield will act as the film's lead while Willem Dafoe brings Death Note's looming God of Death to life.

However, for beginners, it may be difficult to suss out who the latter character is. The supernatural figure is a main character in Death Note, but anyone unfamiliar with the term 'shinigami' may not know how to pick the creature out. The god, who is named Ryuk, was given a brief cameo in the first teaser for Netflix's Death Note. So, if you want to see what the god will bring, then you just need to check out the video's end once more.

At the end of the Death Note teaser, fans hear a foreboding voice speak to Light as he sits in his room. The high school student is not able to see through the shadows, but a pair of piercing red eyes can be made out from the dark. A gravely voice then asks, "Shall we begin?" And there you have it; You have now met Ryuk.

The character is a noted one in Death Note and has come to act as the mascot for the thrilling series. In the teaser, fans are able to briefly see Ryuk's unmistakable outline as his spiky hair, gangly limbs, and thin face are shown loitering in a dark alley. However, in Netflix's take on Death Note, it looks as Ryuk may be ditching his bat-like wings. Instead, fans can see an array of spikes edging out from Ryuk's back, and the terrifying look may take place of the god's feathery shoulder pads from the anime.

If you are not familiar with Ryuk already, then you should know a bit about his role in Death Note. The ancient god is a harbinger of death and lives his life in a boring fashion. To entertain himself, Ryuk decides to drop a mysterious Death Note upon the world to see what will come of its lethal powers. A boy named Light finds the journal and takes it homes, using its gifts to kill criminals at first. However, as Light's god-complex grows, Ryuk watches with interest as the boy strives to cull anyone who would disturb his would-be utopia.

In the anime, Ryuk acts as an aide to Light occasionally as the boy defends his crusade. However, as the story comes to an end, the god grows tired of Light's bumbling cause. When it becomes apparently that Light will soon be arrested for his crimes, Ryuk decides to take his journal back since he does not want to follow Light into jail. To do so, the god quickly writes the boy's name down in the Death Note, leaving Ryuk to giggle over his fun memories of the crazed murderer.

Based on the famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone's name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die.
