The Appeal of Frieren

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has had its fair share of magical battles, but its true strength lies in its compelling storytelling. The series begins in an unorthodox manner, taking place immediately after Frieren and her previous crew defeated a demon lord and brought peace to the world. Frieren herself, thanks to being an elf, has an exceptionally long lifespan, meaning that she witnesses her former allies die thanks to old age, leaving her to grieve for them.

With time passing far differently for the titular character, Frieren sets out to try to learn more about humanity and her own mortality, attempting to forge relationships that will help connect her to the mortal world. Luckily, even if you missed the first season, you have months to prepare for Frieren’s return, and the episodes are available to stream on Crunchyroll.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End first kicked off as a manga in 2020 from writer Kanehito Yamada and artist Tsukasa Abe, continuing to release new chapters regularly. Like many other manga series on the market, the story has been hit with hiatuses in the past, but currently, Yamada and Abe are still working on expanding the elfen lead’s tale. In addition to the main series, there have been several spin-offs that demonstrate the franchise’s immense popularity and the vast universe that remains to be explored.
