Fullmetal Alchemist fans have surely heard the franchise is making a comeback this year. The series is getting its first live-action adaptation this December with Ryosuke Yamada playing Edward Elric. The hero's younger brother has kept its actor quiet for some time, but it seems the secret is out. A new report has just confirmed Atomu Mizuishi is playing Alphonse Elric.
According to Anime News Network, the actor will voice Alphonse in the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist movie. The character will be portrayed fully by CGI, but Mizuishi was used for motion capture. The actor was used on set to film scenes with Yamada, and director Fumihiko Sori says the pair had great chemistry. Mizuishi only nabbed the role after intense auditions where he beat out 100 other hopeful actors.
If you are concerned how the boy will do with Alphonse's voice, there is no need to fret. Sori released a statement not long ago saying that Alphonse's original voice actress, Rie Kugimiya, has already seen the adaptation. The actress praised Mizuishi's vocal talent and told Sori they cast the perfect actor. The creator of Fullmetal Alchemist was also shown the film, and Hiromu Arakawa said she was very happy with Edward and Alphonse's live-action counterparts.
Mizuishi may not be a household name to international fans, but the actor has worked on several notable franchises. The actor has worked on Prince of Tennis and even done musicals for Seraph of the End.
Fullmetal Alchemist has a few months to go before it premieres to the public, but some lucky moviegoers will get to screen the adaptation early. The movie is set to debut at the Tokyo International Film Festival on October 25 before it premieres nationwide on December 1. There is no word on whether the Fullmetal Alchemist movie will screen in the US, but fans are hopeful that Funimation will license the feature.
If you are not familiar with Fullmetal Alchemist, then you have plenty of time to watch the anime before its live-action film arrives. The series follows brothers Edward and Alphonse after their mother tragically passes. They attempt to use alchemy to resurrect her, but the attempt takes Edward's arm and leg - and it takes Alphonse's entire body. Determined to get their bodies restored, Edward and Alphonse try to become State Alchemists so they can find the location of a powerful item known as the Philosopher's Stone. But their journey ultimately leads them into a seedy world of government corruption and mass genocide.
