Written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi, Gintama eventuallyย became one of the most beloved anime and manga franchises of all time, as fans are always anticipating new anime projects even years after itโs been released. The manga began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in 2003 and reached its conclusion in 2019. The series is loved for blending a spectacular story with nonsensical comedy and lovable main characters. As a parody, itโs also famous for being a love letter to Shonen, since it includes several Shonen appreciations, which is why itโs incredibly rewarding for veteran fans. Even after several years since the main story’s ending, the franchise often returns with new adaptations, spin-offs, and more.

What Is Ginatama: Yoshiwara in Flames About?

The original anime adapted the arc in Episodes 139 to 146, following one of the most thrilling plot lines and fights in the entire story. The film follows the same plot with much better animation and the same voice actors, but with much better quality of animation. The arc brings Gintoki and his friends to Yoshiwara, an underground red-light district governed by shady laws where the courtesans face constant oppression.
A kid named Seita steals Gintokiโs wallet only to learn itโs empty, and even his own wallet is missing. He notices he was tricked instead and gets caught by Gintoki. The boy reveals he wants money to buy a woman whom he believes to be his mother. Gintoki and the gang decide to help Seita reunite with his mother, but they soon become the target of Tsukuyo, the head of Yoshiwaraโs paramilitary force known as Hyakka. As the situation takes a dangerous turn, Kaguraโs older brother Kamui also arrives at the scene, and he’s on the opposing side.
Kamui serves as one of the main antagonists of the arc, working with the corrupt forces behind Yoshiwara to satisfy his lust for power. As the arc continues and Gintoki fights against the corrupt forces, the truth behind Seitaโs connection to Yoshiwara unfolds. The anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Netflix, where you can catch up with the story, including the Yoshiwara in Flames Arc.
