Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Takes Surprising Cues From Last Year’s Most Controversial Manga

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is the sequel to Gege Akutami’s magnum opus, continuing the story with new characters and a fresh plot. The first chapter makes it clear that the series will differ greatly from the original. While the original explored deeper themes of human emotions as the core of Cursed Energy, the supernatural force from which sorcerers and cursed spirits are formed, Gege Akutami’s approach in Modulo introduces a new foundation. By incorporating an alien race called the “Simurians,” the sequel signals a notable shift in direction.

Future chapters may even reveal that the origins of Cursed Energy stem from the aliens themselves, similar to how Naruto later established Chakra as originating from the Otsutsuki clan. Such a development would already make the sequel controversial, but another element could spark even greater debate: its plot centering on the coexistence of humans and aliens. This narrative choice recalls Drama Queen by Kuraku Ichikawa, last year’s most talked-about new manga on Manga Plus, which earned its place at the top precisely because of its controversial themes.

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Slightly Echoes Manga Plus’ Controversial Hit From Last Year

Near the end of the year, Shueisha’s Manga Plus platform highlights the achievements of its titles across various categories. One of the most popular is “Top New Manga.” While Shonen Jump’s Ichi the Witch initially claimed the spot, Drama Queen debuted on December 1, 2024, and quickly surpassed it with around 500,000 views, securing the title by a wide margin. This category is determined by the number of views a new series garners with its first chapter.

However, the reason Drama Queen stirred such uproar in the manga community wasn’t its quality but its controversy. The story revolves around the coexistence of humans and aliens on Earth, with aliens hailed as saviors after deflecting a meteor and rescuing the planet. Their elevated status in society, however, strains human relations, which the protagonists embody. The main characters, Seiran Kitami and Nomamoto, openly display prejudice against the aliens, with the plot focusing on their attempts to kill them. Adding to the controversy, the female lead, Nomamoto, develops a disturbing habit of eating aliens.

While Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo hasn’t taken such an extreme approach, the potential is evident. Much like Drama Queen, it emphasizes the theme of coexistence between humans and the alien race, the Simurians. Maru, the alien protagonist who joins the Okkotsu siblings, is on a quest to discover whether coexistence is possible. Although the latest chapter suggests Maru isn’t evil, it leaves open the possibility of conflict. The chapter strongly implies that a war between humans and Simurians may be inevitable, and with Simurians holding the upper hand due to their superior power, Drama Queen’s controversial narrative might, after all, echo through Modulo.

After Maru joins Yuka and Tsurugi on their first mission, he reveals his intent to determine whether his alien race and humans can truly coexist, and from his words, it is clear he takes this mission seriously. However, the real threat surfaces when the chapter’s main villain reveals that the alien invasion of Earth is classified as a special grade incident, on par with Ryomen Sukuna’s attack. This implies that the power Maru’s race possesses is comparable to, or perhaps even greater than, Sukuna’s. The troubling part is that sorcerers are no longer as powerful as they once were during the era of Gojo Satoru and Yuji Itadori, suggesting the current generation is significantly weaker.

With Maru’s quest centered on coexistence and his eventual discovery that sorcerers are far weaker than Simurians could drastically tip the balance of power. This would risk humans becoming subjugated, with Simurians positioned as society’s dominant force, echoing the controversial themes of Drama Queen. Another possibility, also reminiscent of Drama Queen, is that while Maru himself may not turn out to be evil, the primary antagonists of the story could indeed be Simurians.

Since Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo has been announced as a short series of about three volumes, it seems clear that the Simurians will serve as the central antagonists, and no other antagonist will be announced later. It is likely that Maru, who may ultimately side with the human sorcerers, will confront his own kind in the final chapters, mirroring Drama Queen’s recent plotline, where an alien ally turns against their race to aid the protagonists. As the story stands now, the direction of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo remains uncertain, and it has yet to show the potential to live up to its predecessor.
