One Piece on Netflix Has Disappointing News For Anime Fans

One Piece has been going through quite the “golden age” in recent years, thanks to a variety of projects that Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates have spawned. The shonen franchise’s final saga is playing out in both its manga and anime adaptations, already giving the Thousand Sunny’s crew some of the biggest battles of their career. On Netflix, the streaming service is preparing to bring back the live-action adaptation for its second season next year. Unfortunately, on the platform, the success of the live-action Straw Hats doesn’t correlate to success across the board, according to a new report.

Realizing the success of One Piece, Netflix, in recent days, decided to focus on releasing the anime adaptation’s latest episodes on its platform. Joining the likes of Crunchyroll in releasing new episodes of the Egghead Island Arc, the streaming service might not be receiving the ratings they were hoping for. This year, One Piece‘s Egghead Arc has garnered around 3.7 million views, which might seem like a big number, but trails behind many of Netflix’s other offerings. For example, Demon Slayer’s Entertainment District Arc alone scored 4.9 million views, not even taking into account the rest of the anime series. Another example of Luffy’s decline is that newcomer Sakamoto Days has garnered 24 million views, dunking on One Piece in its wake.

Why Is One Piece’s Egghead Arc Sinking?

Toei Animation

One of the biggest reasons why Luffy’s latest fight against the World Government hasn’t been doing as well on Netflix is its release schedule. When Crunchyroll releases new One Piece episodes, it does so at the same time as Japan, simulcasting the series regularly. Netflix, unfortunately, has to usually wait around six days to do the same, meaning anime fans will typically jump to other platforms to see the latest stories forged by creator Eiichiro Oda. As it stands, there doesn’t appear to be any changes that are in the works for Netflix’s release of the Grand Line, so the series might not be able to hit the same heights overall.

As for what is currently taking place in One Piece’s anime, viewers have gone through a roller coaster of emotions this year. As Luffy and company fight against Saturn and the other members of the military, the Toei Animation production broke hearts by focusing on Kuma’s backstory. With his family torn apart and Kuma transformed into a weapon of war for the World Government, the larger-than-life figure finally got a slice of revenge by taking a shot at Saturn of the Five Elders. While said punch wasn’t a killing blow, it’s a moment that some shonen fans have been waiting to see for quite some time.
