The new show debuted in 2016 and takes place years after the Golden Age Arc of the Berserk manga. It follows the fallen hero Guts, who is one of the most devastating and feared swordsmen in the world. Carrying an enormous broadsword, Guts is on a quest to kill the “Apostles” – demons who inhabit our world.

Along the way, Guts partners with a fairie named Puck as he travels the countryside, and they encounter all of the world’s hidden mysteries.

It’s Based On An Incredible Manga

Berserk is an incredibly beloved manga series, and fans have been following the story of the Band Of The Hawk for years now.

This new series is the third adaptation from the series, following a show in 1997 and a set of movies just after that.

The Characters Are Complex

Each of the characters in this series finds themselves navigating a complex maze of emotions and motivations. 

Guts obviously has the most draw, as a lone soldier working through the issues of the present, and the nightmares of the past, simultaneously. His history of heartbreak is well-told through flashbacks, and it makes for some intriguing storytellng. 

The other characters, Puck included, are worth investing your time in as well. Just a couple of episodes with these characters and you’ll be hooked.

The Berserk manga works a lot like a classic epic – it tells the adventures of a band of heroes over the course of multiple years.

The original anime followed the Golden Age Arc, which captured the Band Of The Hawk at the height of their prominence. You were able to witness the rise of these soldiers and how they worked together.

Now, in the new series, you get a chance to witness what happened after they disbanded. Guts takes much of the responsibility of the group, and that weight is a lot for one man to bear.
