It has been five years since the last Evangelion film was released, and fans have been teased time and time again that there will be a future Evangelion film. Today mech fans finally get some good news, as a tweet today has officially confirmed that there is work being done on a new Evangelion film.

The studio behind director Hideaki Anno, Khara, tweeted out the picture above on Wednesday. The picture state "Shin Eva meeting. We're hard at work in production!" Social media has been hoping for a new Evangelion after a message seen after the Shin Godzilla vs. Evangelion Symphony, which told fans to "please look foward to the next work in the Godzilla franchise and Shin Evangelion." Hideaki has also told fans that he has been working hard on the highly anticipated new installment to the Evangelion franchise.

The title Shin Evangelion Gekijoban or Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 was announced back in 2012, but director Hideaki Anno took a break from the series to work on the award wining film Shin Godzilla. Now that he has finished Godzilla he is setting his sights and time on the new Evangelion film.

Neon Genesis Evangelion was first broadcast back in 1995. The series quickly gained worldwide critical acclaim, and is a cultural icon. The combination of a beautiful score, deep psychological themes, and amazing visuals set this series above the rest of the mech genre. Many critics say that the series is the technical revival of the anime industry.

The series follows a 15 year old boy Shinji Ikari, fifteen years after a global tragedy that changed the world as we know it. He is pushed to become a pilot of the bio-machines called Evangelions. The Evangelions are used to battle Angels, which are a race of giant monstrous beings who have been awakened. Shinji befriends others his age, such as a girl named Rei, and Asuka. It ends up that the global tragedy was no accident, but instead was caused by the mysterious Angels crashing to earth, and the team of mech wielding teenagers go to battle to destroy the Angels once and for all.

There is still no official news on when the when the new Shin Evangelion will be released, but it is exciting to hear that it is finally officially in production.
