The Dragon Dentist, is a 8 minute Internet short that impressed the world. The short was originally shown at the Japan Animator's Expo. The short has recently had attention again because it released an English dubbed version at NHK World last month. Today, Sentai Filmworks has announced that it has licensed The Dragon Dentist, for a feature-length two-part television special. Sentai Filmworks describes the story below:

Even mighty dragons can get cavities, and Nonoko has been newly assigned to protect the teeth of the guardian dragon of her country. One day, she discovers an enemy soldier resurrected from the inside of a dragon's tooth, a phenomenon which legend says foretells disaster. In a land ravaged by war, what does fate have in store for The Dragon Dentist Nonoko and her new "apprentice"?

The special has an impressive crew behind it as well, as Khara, the studio behind Shin Godzilla and the upcoming Evangelion film, will be producing the anime. This will mark the first time that Khara will be working on an anime for television. The crew working on the project includes the following:

  • Hideaki Anno as executive producer and sound director,
  • Kazuya Tsurumaki returning from the short as the director.
  • Otaro Maijo is credited for the original work and script
  • Yoji Enokido is writing the new script.
  • Shuichi Iseki is acting as the character designer.
  • Nobuo Kawakami is also an executive producer.

Fans of the short should be excited to see what is to come with the expanding of the story and world behind the short. The original anime seemed to try to fit too much story and content into the short amount of time it had, the special will allow for more. Fans only got a glimpse into the fantastical world that The Dragon Dentist created, and now the Khara team has time to bring it to life.
