When it comes to slaying vampires, there is one anime character who has been front and center in terms of laying creatures of the night to rest. Even though it’s been decades since we last witnessed D staking some vamps, thanks to Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, the swordsman still finds his way back into the public eye. Recently, Dark Horse Comics announced that not only is it bringing D back, but it will be adapting classic stories involving the son of Dracula for North America. While a new anime adaptation has yet to be revealed, these projects might lead us to seeing D back on the screen.

Dark Horse shared that a new comic book series was set to adapt a classic D story in Vampire Hunter D: Fortress of Blood. While not based on any of the previous stories from the novel series or anime films, this four-issue storyline is spawned from a concept from Vampire Hunter D’s creator Hideyuki Kikuchi. Written by author Chris Condon and drawn by artist Filipe Andrade, the series is planning to release its first issue in December of this year. In the story, D struggles with a new vampire lord who is dead set on eradicating humanity and must now attempt to lay siege to an impenetrable fortress. This comic series isn’t the only D-centric series that Dark Horse is releasing.
Vampire Hunter D’s Big Comeback

Alongside this upcoming four-issue series, Dark Horse is also planning to translate Vampire Hunter D: The Rose Princess into English for a North American release. Landing in June 2027, the manga revolves around a female vampire princess who terrorizes a village and claims victims at her discretion. With one villager attempting to save his beloved from a fanged fate, he enlists the aid of D to go on a quest to defeat the evil. The original story was published as a novel in the 1990s, arriving as the ninth major story of the Vampire Hunter D franchise.
On top of the big announcements regarding the return of D, series creator Hideyuki Kikuchi shared his approval for the project and stated, “I am deeply honored to finally see the adaptation of D into an American comic book. I never could have imagined that D, a series born in Japan, would be reborn in the form of an American Comic. I would like to express my gratitude to Dark Horse Comics for making this a reality, and above all, to the people that help make it happen, Michael Gombos , the editor, Judy Khuu, as well as to Filipe Andrade, who created the wonderful illustrations, and Chris Condon, who crafted a superb script tailored for the American comic book format from my original scenario! I hope that this comic will serve as a catalyst for the story of D to spread beyond Japan and the United States, and reach the entire world.”
