More hints at what to expect from the upcoming film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, from our source in the action figure aisle at Toys R Us:

  • We are going to see Gandalf going into the dungeons where Thorin's father is captured
  • They are going to introduce two new orcs: Bolg (who is the skull helmeted orc from the poster we saw earlier), who is the warden of the dungeons. It sounds like he and Gandalf will wage battle... he comes with a Gandalf figure and it mentions that Bolg will encounter Gandalf)
  • The other orc is the father of Bolg (who is referred to as his 'spawn') known as Azog.
  • Finally, the Great Goblin... he is going to be huge, nearly 3 times the size of a dwarf and MASSIVELY fat. His face looks like it is melting, with big flabby jowls. The box mentions he is diseased and covered in sickness, and he rules Goblin Town, which is under the Misty Mountains.

As with the Tauriel stuff earlier today, most of this is actually pretty much an open secret to people who have read the books, but there's some material here that informs the ways in which the movie will either deviate from the book, or what touchstones in the book will appear in what movie. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is due in theaters on December 14, 2012. The first of three films adapting J.R.R. Tolkien's classic precursor to The Lord of the Rings, it stars Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis and Benedict Cumberbatch.
