Finally, after more than a year of waiting, the second season of Into The Badlands is set to premiere. Following a short, six-episode first season, the show returns to its place on Sunday nights – following The Walking Dead.
At the end of the first season, the world was turned upside down for many of the characters – and everyone finds themselves in a difficult place.

Now, six months later, audiences are getting a chance to see what has happened to these warriors in the time since.
With so much change in the world of the Badlands, there’s a lot to take in. Luckily, co-creator Alfred Gough had plenty to reveal about the upcoming season. The showrunner took some time to talk to ComicBook about the changes in the coming episodes, and what fans can expect from the show as a whole in season two.
CB: Take us through the changes from season one to season two. From the look of the trailers, it seems like the world of the show has drastically changed.
Al: Yeah. No. Absolutely. Well, you know, what’s interesting about the first season with six episodes, for us in many ways, it was like doing a super-pilot rather than … You know, because it’s … It’s the … It’s sort of the interesting thing, you know, conundrum of you want to make sure that you’ve told a complete story, but that you also want to make sure that you have a lot of place to go in the story right forward. So, that’s really what it was. And then, season one was kind of world glancing. You know, you saw a little bit of the fort, all the sanctuary, you’ve heard a lot about the world beyond, but you didn’t see it as much. So, what we really wanted to do was open that up. And then, also, we had a location change. We went from New Orleans, where we shot season one, to Ireland, where we shot season two, which allowed us to really open up the show.
Gough went on to explain that some of the architecture of the show will change, and that had a lot to do with the move to Ireland.
Yes. And we move away from that in this season. Like I said, we’ll see more of the work. Frankly, one of the reason we moved from New Orleans to Ireland is to give us more landscapes ’cause as you know, there really isn’t … What we saw in New Orleans is pretty much what it looks like, and we wanted to show a lot more variety to the world. So, that’s what we were able to do with the move to Ireland that seemed good.
Are we gonna see more in season two of some of these other Barons and factions that were teased in season one?
Yes, you will. You’re gonna see … You’re actually gonna meet the Barons in an episode coming up, where in … What’s called a conclave, which is when all the Barons get together when they have a dispute to settle. So, you’ll definitely get to see … You’re gonna meet the other Barons … Some of whom, you’re gonna get to know a lot better this season. And you’ll get to see how the politics and the bigger political machinations of the world work more in season two.
What can fans expect from the new season and, in particular, the addition of Nick Frost to the cast?
Well, you’re gonna see Sunny in a much different place. When he was in season one, he was Quinns’ regent and he was sort of at the top of the food chain. And in season two, at the end of the season he was taken by the River King, but when you meet him he’s out … You know, way out in what we call the outline territories in the world working in a mind, and he meets a character named Bajie played by Nick Frost. Who is, part con-man part hustler. And you’re never quite sure whose side he’s on, so they have a very interesting buddy relationship. And I think it really add to the show.
I think Nick’s been a great addition to the cast, and I think he’s brought humor into the world as well, which I think is … When we were looking at season one the thing that we thought the show need was definitely more humor ’cause you don’t want to become yet another self-serious cable drama.
So, there’s that. And then with M.K., he’s the monks … The abbots who took him at the end of the first season, they have a monastery up in the mountains and he’s been there trying to learn how to control his power. We’ll also get more into that world. What is his power? What are the bigger ramifications of it? We get into … We dig in a little more to the mythology and mysticism of the world as well.
