In a post made to his official Facebook page, The Expendables writer and star Sylvester Stallone announced that Nicolas Cage had been confirmed to star in the upcoming third installment of the Lionsgate action film franchise. In an oddly-worded block of text, Stallone also suggested that they’re reaching out to Star Wars star Harrison Ford, Blade star Wesley Snipes and Sin City‘s Mickey Rourke in the hopes that they’ll join the ensemble cast. The fill will reportedly lose at least Chuck Norris, who appeared in the second installment of the series but who rumor has it didn’t gel with the way the film was being made and whose socially conservative moral stance put him at odds with some of the more R-rated aspects of the movie.Wrote Stallone,
“THE EXPENDABLES 3: We are preparing the film with the same passion and commitment as the previous two. We have confirmed Nicolas Cage, a master actor who gives a veneer intellectual group. Hopefully we can realize to Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes and Mickey Rourke. That is the great mission of the producer. We will continue with the same narrative scheme, the agility and the frenzy, which are inherent to the saga. What will definitely be the last? I can not guarantee. In principle it would be two deliveries, but the affection of the people encouraged us to work on a third. I guess as long as we amused ourselves by offering fun and people, we can continue playing ‘The Expendables’. For now we are not as expendable as it should and as some critics want.”
Besides a third Expendables movie, Warner Brother srecently greenlit Grudge Match, which will see Stallone and Robert DeNiro play retired boxers who step back into the ring one last time, apparently just for the glee of beating on each other in their old age. With six Rocky movies under his belt and a Raging Bull sequel currently in production, that movie will bring the two biggest stars in the history of boxing movies together in a smaller-scale version of what The Expendables franchise has done for ’80s action stars.
