The mid-season premiere of Gotham is titled “Mr. Freeze,” and we get thrown feet-first into the origin story of Victor Fries and his cryogenic weapon. The FOX series took the newer (now 24 years old, but still) origin of the character from Batman: The Animated Series and gave it a few new twists.

But what they really did was provide plenty of shocking, twisted, and downright creepy moments along the way. Here are the five that shocked us the most.
Gotham airs Mondays at 8pm on FOX.
Butch Drills a Thug for Info
If you screw over Butch Gilzean, the new King of the Gotham Underworld, he screws you right back, literally – using the drill attachment on his missing hand… in your forehead.
Yeah, Butch is not messing around now that he’s in a seat of power. Almost equally shocking was when he was about to drill Tabitha Galavan – but just kissed her, instead.
The First Full Freeze
After the tease in the mid-season finale, we got to see a full head-to-toe freeze from Mr. Freeze’s freeze-gun (holy cow that’s a lot of “freeze” in one sentence). The victim was just a cop who was really in the wrong place at the wrong time, and since his formula was not perfected when he shot her, she died from the experience.
She was not the first, and far from the last, that Victor Fries would kill (even in this episode).
Subject A14: Pile of Goo
Easily the most gross-out moment we’ve ever had on Gotham, subject A14’s thawing process looked like it was going really well. He reached normal core body temperature from a human, and looked stable.
And then he began to melt… and melt… and was finally naught but a pile of formerly human goo.
When things go wrong for Victor Fries, they go spectacularly wrong, which doesn’t bode well for his or Nora’s futures.
Don’t Go to Pieces
When Victor freezes the guard and the pharmacist, he only needs one of them to check his experiment results. After loading the pharmacist into his van, the guard is nowhere to be seen.
That is, until Bullock and Gordon careen around the corner, and smash directly into him, frozen and staring from his chair. He shatters into countless pieces, his frozen head jammed in the windshield and staring Bullock in the face.
The guard had one heck of an… icy stare.
See No Evil, Do No Evil.
The last thing Hugo Strange said to his patient Nigel was, “See no evil, do no evil.”
Well, Nigel took that quite literally. When Penguin is shown back to his cell, directly across from Nigel’s, he sees the inmate/patient with blood all over his hands, and no eyes. He’s not in any apparent pain, either, just repeating Strange’s words like a mantra.
Yeah, Hugo Strange is going to be a huge problem for the citizens of Gotham City.
